COZY CLOSET FIREPLACES
With Fall officially upon us, and LA’s rainy season setting in, we’re all looking for a place to cozy up! I’ve always believed the closet is an ideal space to retreat and relax, and more and more clients are looking to create comfortable sitting areas and lounge spaces in their dressing rooms! Today, I am dreaming of ways we could cozy up a dream closet with a fireplace. Yes, you read that right — we’ve been tasked with incorporating fireplaces into closets on more than one occasion, so today, I’m sharing some inspiration and designer perspective for designing a dream dressing room where you can cozy up by the fire!
I believe in the modern home, a closet should be an extension of your home, and another living space where you can unwind, work, or entertain! With every square inch of real estate being at a premium, closets today need to serve many purposes, and having the luxury of space to create a dedicated workspace or sitting area in a dressing room opens up so many creative possibilities for the design!
Before you start thinking a fireplace might interrupt your design, or distract from the overall look and feel of the space, consider the many modern integrations that are possible! One can be integrated seamlessly in so many ways, setting the tone and ambiance for a much more inviting space! If you’re designing around an existing fireplace, say converting a bedroom or living space into a dressing area, consider flanking with wall wardrobes or integrated millwork, so the feature becomes a part of the perimeter cabinetry! If you’re looking to create more of a focal point, you might let the fireplace dictate the design of the closet, keeping a separate dedicated sitting area in one corner of the room.
The fireplace is also another great way to bring personality into the space! As such a striking and unexpected focal point, the mantle can really set the tone for the look of the closet, and is a fun opportunity to bring in new materials — stone, metal, wood — which you can play up in other areas of the design. If you lean to a more eclectic aesthetic, the fireplace can be a great place to display personal items, and style with accessories and floral arrangements!
Ultimately, there are endless possibilities for creating a closet in a space with a fireplace — consider it an added amenity rather than something you have to work around! You just might find this becomes your new favorite spot to cozy up at the end of the day!
