PROTECTING YOUR FAVORITE PIECES

Creating a great closet isn’t just about a pretty, organized space! It’s also about protecting and maintaining the items in your wardrobe, ensuring you can properly care for them and continue to enjoy them for years to come. The elements can be harsh on our clothing and accessories, and ensuring they are protected in the closet will go a long way to extending the life of your investments! Today, I’m going to share a few of the things we consider when designing a closet to take care of your belongings.

DOORS

Keeping your items enclosed behind doors in the closet is one of the biggest things you can do to protect your pieces. This protects against dust, insects, and accidental damage like snags and tears when moving around in the space. Especially if your closet has a lot of natural light, having protection from harmful UV rays will preserve the colors and dyes in your clothing, and keep leather items from becoming dry and cracked. Consider solid or mirrored doors for the ultimate protection — if you prefer to see your items behind glass, consider a UV protective film!

CEDAR LINING

Cedar is another great trick of the trade to protect more delicate / seasonal items that get stored away for long periods of time. You can line a cabinet, a room or a drawer with cedar to protect against insects and moisture until you’re ready to rotate these pieces back into your daily wardrobe!

CLIMATE CONTROL

Many people don’t realize their most delicate formal pieces and furs require proper climate-controlled storage to prevent damage. For this reason, we like to incorporate individual refrigerated cabinets in our clients’ dressing rooms for special pieces. Sometimes, clients have collections of vintage or archival pieces that stay stored most of the year, and maintaining an optimal environment is critical to keeping these pieces in good condition!

SUEDE INSERTS

Outfitting your drawers with properly designed suede inserts is one of the easiest ways to protect your smaller accessories and jewelry. This ensures loose items like necklaces don't get tangled, as well as preventing unsightly scratches on sunglasses and fine jewelry!

PILLOWS AND SHAPERS

Keeping your leather accessories properly stuffed is critical to keeping them in good condition! Boots, bags, and other soft-sided accessories can fall flat on shelves, and develop cracks and wrinkles over time. Boot trees, shoe inserts, and custom purse pillows will prevent accidental damage and keep these items looking their best for future seasons!
