DESIGN FOR A GROWING FAMILY
Often, clients come to us looking to design closets for their kids, in hopes of creating a space that will grow with the changing needs of childhood and adolescence! This typically entails designing flexible storage ideas, like removable rods and and adjustable shelving, so that the closet can adjust as clothes and accessories get larger! However, we were recently tasked with the design for a family building their forever home — the girls are growing up, and going off to college, but need a space to come home to.
Here, the goal is to create closets for teenagers and young adults to use for years to come — decidedly modern spaces to fit the personalities and changing tastes of a growing family. Here, we aren’t limited to the constraints of creating something that will be flexible for children, but can design tailored, boutique spaces in a smaller footprint, with all the same conveniences and considerations as a master dressing room.
The girls have their own collections of accessories, shoes, jewelry, handbags, etc. As young adults, they want spaces that feel like a retreat. We decided to stick to a generally neutral palette, but giving each closet its own unique personality and millwork treatment based on the girls’ individual personalities. As we typically do with any dressing room design, we have explored many iterations of material options, allowing each space to take on a language of its own, but in keeping with the overall design of the home!
The goal is that these will be personal spaces that will accommodate needs of adult children, and potentially guests, for many years to come! With construction now underway, I can’t wait to share the finished product as it comes to life, along with a couple of pretty magnificent master dressing rooms!!!
