DESIGNING A DREAM VANITY

Many of my clients opt to create custom vanities in their dressing rooms, as this is a critical part of the getting-ready process! Vanities are so personal, and can be tricked out to incorporate so many bells and whistles. Generally, clients are looking for ways to elevate this part of their morning routine, making a space that is both beautiful and highly functional! Today, I am going to share a few of my favorite features to consider when designing a custom vanity for your home!

MAKEUP INSERTS

Just like the other drawers in your dressing room, I recommend custom inserts for all your cosmetic needs! These drawers can get messy and chaotic, so it is important to add a little structure, and put a system in place so you always know where to find your go-to products. For example, I like to separate drawers by product type — eyes, lips, face, nails, etc. Lastly, we always opt for a durable, wipeable fabric in these drawers, but a clear acrylic is another great option that will be easy to keep clean.

HAIR TOOLS

I always try to have a solution to tidy up all the tools in a vanity drawer — no one has time to untangle cords when they’re getting ready in the morning! Creating a drawer where every tool has a custom holder is a total game changer! Plus, if you integrate electrical directly in the drawer, you can keep these items plugged in so it’s easier to stow away quickly between uses, if it’s a tool you’re using all the time.

CHARGING

Charging solutions are critical to consider in a closet, and especially for a vanity where so many devices and small appliances will live! I always want the charging to feel well considered and intentional, not to mention aesthetically pleasing! Pop-up outlets and charging pads are great for countertop surfaces, to disappear seamlessly into the design. Outlets in drawers and pull-outs are also great as they can be accessed when needed, but have no impact on the exterior aesthetics!

MAGNIFYING MIRRORS

Mirrors are such a major element of creating a functional vanity or dressing table! You want to make sure the mirror is at an ideal height, and distance from your seated position, in order for it to truly be functional for hair and makeup! Additionally, I like to incorporate custom magnifying mirrors so you don’t have to eat up space on the countertop with a freestanding mirror.

LIGHTING

Much like in the closet, good lighting is always a consideration at the vanity! Decorative sconces are great, and add to the ambiance. These are great as they can be positioned to either side of a vanity, illuminating your face at eye level, without obstructing the mirror! Lighting can also be incorporated directly into the design of your vanity mirror, for a more custom look. This will give great all-over lighting for applying makeup!

BRUSH STORAGE

Makeup brushes come in so many shapes and sizes, and can get so messy when tossed in a drawer. I like to create standing storage for them, so everything is kept clean, and the bristles stay fluffy! Integrating these in the countertop is a great way to keep everything accessible. Freestanding holders and brush cups are also great for keeping your brushes organized and in their best condition!

COSMETIC FRIDGES

Many people don’t realize this, but our cosmetic, fragrance, and skincare products last much longer when refrigerated. Skincare products are expensive, and I am all for finding ways to keep them fresher for longer! Under-counter fridges are great at the vanity, and you can keep water, champagne, and cosmetics all within reach! A countertop mini fridge is also a great solution for storing a few products. If you’re designing custom, a mini fridge inside a medicine cabinet is also perfect for keeping these products all together with your other personal hygiene items!
