ORGANIZING IN SMALL SPACES

Following our latest feature with MyDomaine, I wanted to share some of my own professional tips and inspiration for organizing in small spaces! Small closets are a reality for many of us, and require extra attention to keep everything tidy.

No matter the square footage, it’s always important to find a place for everything in your closet, so you know what you have, and use what you have!

DESIGN / CONSTRUCTION

A good design is the first step for creating a closet where you can stay organized! In small spaces, it’s critical that no square inch goes to waste, and every item is considered.

PROTECT YOUR BELONGINGS

Using glass doors to keep the closet dust-free are a great option when dealing with small spaces! They’ll protect your clothes, while still making the closet feel open, and your clothing accessible!

ORGANIZE FOR YOUR LIFESTYLE

Consider the way you get ready when organizing your closet. Put things you access often in the most convenient areas, so you aren’t digging through the closet unnecessarily! This will save you so much time and headache!

NO MORE STACKS OF CLOTHING

Stop folding your jeans and sweaters too high on shelves — you’ll have a mess to refold every time you need to remove an item! Instead, opt for sweater hangers, pant racks, and pull-out shelves for these items.

HOOKS

There are so many kinds of hooks you can use to upgrade your closet — purse hooks, hat hooks, and my personal favorite, the pull-out valet hook! These are the secret weapons to transforming your closet into a more functional space, regardless of size or budget.

DEDICATE SPACE FOR SHOES

Shoes are one category that can really take over a closet if not given ample room. Space your shelves apart at appropriate heights so there is no wasted space! This way, nothing ends up in the floor.

HAMPERS

Having a system for laundry in the closet is a game-changer for keeping things organized! I like to incorporate built-in hampers for laundry, tailoring, and dry cleaning so that even laundry day is easy!

MIRRORS

A good mirror is a must in any closet — but in small spaces, not only is this functional for getting ready, it will help to visually expand the closet! A large mirror in a closet is a great trick of the eye that automatically makes you feel you have a little more room to breathe.

PACKING TABLES

If your space is too small for an island, consider a pull-out packing table! This is a clever way to incorporate a surface for packing, folding, or changing purses, and can easily tuck away when not in use.
