CLOSETS WITH CONTRAST
We’re so excited to be taking on our first New Orleans client, and feeling so inspired by the architecture, culture, and character of that vibrant city! The design directive is to blend modern functionality and tastes with the original character of a Civil War-era Garden District home. This is an exciting challenge, which has us exploring ways to design for modern living that will also maintain the architectural integrity and original details of such an historic property! Regardless of style in your own home, many of us walk this line, balancing edgy new ideas with familiar, livable styles. Today, in drawing inspiration for our new project, I want to explore the ways we, as designers and homeowners, can juxtapose the old and new in exciting ways! Think modern minimalism meeting a pre-War Parisian apartment — stylistic pairings that allow each to shine, where neither style is in competition.
FIXTURES + HARDWARE
If you’re designing for a space that is full of architectural character, you can inject some serious modern flair with a decorative light fixture! Things like lighting and decorative hardware are very easy to swap out should you ever change your mind, and want to restore the original room, and won’t compromise the integrity of the space if you’re concerned with preservation! For example, our client’s closet will have an original plaster ceiling medallion, which is part of the original architecture — pairing this with a modern pendant and a couple of sculptural sconces will undoubtedly freshen up the space, while still showcasing the home’s original character.
ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS + MOULDINGS
Maybe your home has lots of original wall paneling and trim details, or you’re looking to add a little visual interest to your space! Mouldings will go a long way in creating an architectural backdrop, if you’re looking to create this kind of contrast! Consider a heavy crown, tall baseboards, mantels, and archways as opportunities to give a sense of place and occasion to your home. Pairing this with a more modern design approach and minimal millwork is a great way to dress up your home with warmth.
WALL COVERINGS
Wallpaper, once a thing of the past, has really come back around! I think a fabric wall covering or a hand-painted paper is a great way to really warm up a room and create a layered look! If you’re interested in creating a contrast of old and new in your space, a simple textured wall treatment is the perfect way to tie things together — you’re getting the tactile attention to detail of a historic home, but with a subdued, more modern sensibility that will work with your other furnishings!
FURNISHINGS
The furnishings are a delicate dance when you are balancing old and new in a home! I like to opt for simpler pieces, with clean lines and soft upholstery, but there is also lots of opportunity to incorporate more classic silhouettes as well. Choose pieces that fit your lifestyle in timeless materials and finishes!
CABINETRY STYLE
When it comes to cabinetry, I think the simpler the better for creating a stark contrast in the closet! For this project, our client wants minimal millwork detailing, with flat fronts, touch-latch doors and drawers, and frameless overlays throughout. The clean lines will draw a clear contrast to the more romantic detailing and millwork throughout the home!
