HOME (GIFTS) FOR THE HOLIDAYS
You’ve seen the gift guides at this point, but have you actually finished your holiday shopping? If your answer is “no” and you’re looking for fresh inspiration, I’ve got you covered!
When I think about the “most wonderful time of the year” I think about aesthetics, naturally. The holidays bring out such unique and personal decor. So, I thought it would be fun to take a closer look at some of the most swoon-worthy movie homes for some iconic gift guide inspiration.
Home Alone
While the McCallisters’ design perspective may not be an obvious choice of inspiration, their traditional and spirited style endures. Think red and walnut, everything! I recall them having a collection of red pans in the kitchen, which makes a great gift for culinary enthusiasts. The McCallisters’ fireplace features brass bird accents, a nice option for collectors of pretty things. Or, go full on festive with a traditional nutcracker (the McCallisters had several of them) or a santa-approved floral arrangement (add a note that reads: "Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal" for a touch of Kevin).
Something's Gotta Give
Few movie homes can compete with Erica Barry’s pristine Hamptons house. Its crisp, white, modern and coastal sensibility is truly timeless. This is an ideal reference home for the refined person in your life who seems to have it all together. Opt for a nice cutting board, a beautiful bottle of olive oil, classic crystal candlesticks or a luxe coffee table book. Perhaps the most apropos Something’s Gotta Give gift would be a vase; Erica always has fresh flowers throughout her home.
The Great Gatsby
Jay Gatsby’s manse is the ultimate deco-meets-decadence movie home. And, arguably, the best party house of all time. Use this as inspiration for that person in your life who’s equally nostalgic and bougie. From vintage-inspired barware to eye-catching decor accents like trays, bookends and perfume bottles, there are no limits to the ritzy and glitzy gift ideas!
The Holiday
There’s not a more charming movie house than the one Amanda finds herself impulsively escaping to in the English countryside in The Holiday. The quaint cottage offers a wealth of inspiration for provincial and homey gift ideas. A tea set for two (Jude Law not included)? Or, perhaps a bath caddy to go with a claw foot tub? Amanda was always wrapping herself in cozy blankets, another great gift for a homebody type!
The Royal Tenenbaums
Has there been a more whimsical movie home than the one inhabited by the Tenenbaums? If you need some eccentric inspiration for a giftee, this is the perfect retro reference. While Wes Anderson doesn’t shy away from peculiar aesthetics that may seem unapproachable, there are ways to embrace it while still celebrating the quirkiness. A wacky, but still stylish lamp? A satirical tray or ironic brass taxidermy? Or, a nice piece of luggage, inspired by the one and only Margot Tenenbaum, of course.
