VERSACE ON THE FLOOR

I’ve been really into nostalgic prints and patterns lately. So in honor of the Emmy win for one of my favorite shows this season, The Assassination of Gianni Versace, I want to take a look at one of the iconic designer’s trademark prints! I recently shared my adoration for all things Toile de Jouy,  and now I’m gushing over Greek key, or meander/meandros as it’s sometimes referred. The iconic symbol has been used throughout fashion and home design for decades; but, long before it appeared on dresses and dressers, the decorative border constructed from a continuous line, shaped into a repeated geometric motif, was an emblem found on sculptures, tombs, carvings and buildings from early civilizations.

In today’s style scene, Versace is the (Greek) keyholder of this timeless print, a trademark iconography for the Italian fashion house. The legacy brand’s Spring 2018 Tribute collection was stunning and immediately caught my attention. The collection honored Donatella’s late brother, Gianni, and pulled from the house’s archives, blending bold, colorful plaids and wild animal prints with classic Versace touches like gilded embellishment and, of course, the meander motif.

It’s clear the classic symbol has transcended time, cultures, and geography. In fashion, particularly as it relates to Versace’s recent collection, Greek key is one of the most versatile prints out there, working well in every color, as an accent and alongside other patterns.

In home design, Greek key is also an important aesthetic, adding subtle, yet impactful architectural interest. A rug can create dimension, a dresser may introduce a global sensibility and a lampshade might bring a much-needed pop of color.
